Hummingbird Feeders
Let’s talk about happy hummers. Those teeny little birds, flitting around trees and flowers, looking for something sweet to drink. They lay the smallest eggs of any bird on the planet. They see more colours than humans thanks to a 4th cone in their eyes. They fly up to 45 mph and can fly for 20 hours without stopping. A group of hummingbirds is called a charm, a charm of hummingbirds may be the cutest thing I have ever heard.
But most importantly, hummingbirds are fueled by sugar and insects. And they eat a lot. To avoid starvation, a hummingbird eats over half its weight in nectar and insects each day. If the average man had the metabolism of a hummingbird, he would have to eat 285 pounds (129 kg) of meat every day to maintain his weight. Installing a hummingbird feeder in your garden, and cleaning and replenishing it often will help keep these special little birds happy and healthy while they are here in North America for the summer.
