Holy Smokes

Our smokey variation on a traditional Monte Carlo

The Monte Carlo is made with bourbon and benedictine. We are using Dom Benedictine which is made in France and is a combination of brandy and benedictine — it’s a little smoother than the herbal benedictine. Benedictine was invented by monks and then taken over by a producer. The religious history behind the liqueur and then our use of smoke in this cocktail is why we named this one the ‘Holy Smokes’

Our Cup of Choice: Apex Whisky Glass

A bourbon drink deserves a nicely weighted glass and since this drink is mostly alcohol, it’s better to use a shorter glass. Our Apex Whisky Glass checks off all the boxes for this cocktail and adds a nice pop of colour.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz Bulleit bourbon

  • 1/2 oz Benedictine

  • 1/3 oz Sage and Honey Simple Syrup

  • 1/3 oz Lemon Juice

To make the sage and honey simple syrup we used a one to one ratio of honey to water and then added 3-4 sage leaves and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

We start by adding our ice to our Latitude Carafe. Then add your bourbon, benedictine, simple syrup and lemon juice. Give this a good stir - for about one minute or so. We filled our Apex Whisky Glass with one large whisky ice cube and then pour our drink into the glass.

A little variation to make this alcohol forward cocktail a little less strong — you can add water or soda to dilute it!

Garnish:

  • Cedar Stick

  • Sage

  • Lemon Rind

We used one of our glass cloches to help incorporate smoke into this drink, but you can use any glass jar/bowl/container that fully covers the cup. While making these for our cocktail hour we used a glass punty to light our cedar stick. We totallllllly get that you probably don’t have a glass shop in your kitchen so a simple lighter will work. Light the end of your cedar stick and put it right beside your cocktail. Add the cloche overtop of both the cocktail and the cedar stick to trap all the smoke and let it ‘marinate’ for about one minute. Once you remove the cloche give your cocktail one final stir. Slightly press your sage and lemon rind to get extra flavour out of them and then float them on top of your drink.

And voila!! The Holy Smokes!!

xoxo
