Banana Mint Julep

Mystery March

For our March cocktail hour we all came up with a bunch of ingredients, wrote them down and put them in a hat. We each had to choose an alcohol, a fruit, a spice/herb and (to make things interesting) a wildcard.

Our staff member Hunter started the first cocktail hour Friday in March.
Her mystery ingredients were…

Alcohol: Bourbon
Fruit: Banana
Spice/Herb: Mint
Wildcard: Marshmallow

Our Cup of Choice: Short Halcyon Cup

This is a fairly strong drink with mostly just alcohol so we chose a short cup. We’re all just a little obsessed with the soft pastels of these limited edition Halcyon Cups.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz bourbon

  • 2 - 3 mint leaves

  • 1 oz banana simple syrup

To make the banana simple syrup add one cup of sugar to 1/3 cup of water and bring to a simmer whisking continuously until bubbling, then simmer covered for 10 minutes. Add one well ripened banana, sliced, and continue to simmer for an additional ten minutes, whisking occasionally.

We’re building this drink in one of our latitude carafes and then pouring over ice. Start by adding the mint to the latitude carafe and give it a quick muddle to release all the aroma and flavour. Then add your ice, bourbon and banana simple syrup to the carafe. Stir all of this together until the glass feels cold (about one minute.) Then strain your cocktail in to your halcyon cup over ice.

Garnish:

  • 1 Marshmallow

We are often asked at the glass blowing shop if we are expert marshmallow roasters and this cocktail really proved us experts - of course we used a little map gas to roast them to perfection in about 10 seconds! If you don’t have a map gas or a burning camp fire behind you, you can make your marshmallows gooey by putting them in the microwave for about 15 seconds. Or — try roasting them in your toaster oven like you would on a stick over a campfire.

For being a mysterious cocktail these turned out delicious!!! We highly recommend a banana mint julep with a roasted marshmallow garnish.

xoxo
